There is a list of rules for wedding dresses that begins with wearing white and more often than not, ends with a ballroom length skirt. While tradition in some form or fashion usually finds its way into every detail of wedding planning, there’s no rhyme or reason for why you have to be a conformist bride, wearing what’s always been worn.

For this list of cool and bold bridal fashions, we’ve selected some of the coolest brides around to serve as the ultimate examples of what can come from blending your own personal style and high fashion design inspiration to create a look that’s all your own for your big day. Like all things eternally cool, these bridal styles stand the test of time, appearing timeless and modern regardless of when they were worn.

1. Mick and Bianca Jagger

In a photo taken after their 1974 wedding at the St. Tropez town hall, Mick and the newly summoned Bianca Jagger, formally Bianca Perez Morena de Marcias, are original names in cool wedding style. The former actress and current human rights advocate is seen wearing an oversized white hat and an YSL Le Smoking Jacket over an ankle length white skirt; opting to go without an undergarment for the jacket keeps this look far out of range of tradition or conservatism.

2. Alan Fergusun and Solange Knowles

In a photo taken before her 2014 wedding to music video director Alan Fergusun, singer and celebrity DJ Solange Knowles wears a beautifully modern design by French couture designer Staphane Rolland. The look was not only bold, stylish, and ultra cool, it also enabled the hip bride to ride alongside her husband to be on a bicycle to their wedding at the Marigney Opera House in New Orleans.

3. Colorful Brides

In a yellow hued gown with intricate flowers adorning her long, dark hair, Elizabeth Taylor marries her fifth, and shortly after their divorce her sixth, husband actor Richard Burton in 1964. While even Elizabeth Taylor couldn’t launch a wide spread trend of non-white wedding dresses it has been seen since, on actress and fashion monarch Sarah Jessica Parker who wore an elegant black gown on her wedding day, and on singer and celebrity chef Kelis who married Nas, rapper and subject of the Tribeca Film Festival’s 2014 opening night film, in a traditionally designed green wedding dress. Green was also the color Taylor would marry Burton in the second time around.

4. Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale

In 2002 at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, Gwen Stefani married singer Gavin Rossdale in this Dior wedding dress that is an absolutely perfect fit for the experimental, hit making, punk-ish singer and fashion designer. The silk gown is dip died in a pink that can only make late 90’s pop music lovers reminisce about the trend that was similarly died pink hair.

5. Yoko Ono and John Lennon

In a decidedly counter culture look that still perfectly captures the music and mood of the 60’s that has endured and become engrained in our thoughts of the time, Yoko Ono is captured in 1969 with her new husband John Lennon in Gibraltar. Couldn’t you picture the textured mini dress, knee high socks, comfortable shoes, and floppy hat being worn at the wedding of some young jet setter or another in this day and age?
