Getting Married on the Not So Cheap – The Most Expensive Places to Get Married In

The average cost of getting married in the U.S. is approximately $30,000; however, that may be a proverbial drop in the ocean when compared to the average cost of a wedding in some states.

New York Times Square

When it comes to getting married in the Big Apple, it will take a hefty bite out of your bank balance, with the average Manhattan wedding costing almost $87,000 and the average Long Island wedding costing about $57,000. The outer boroughs of NY have an average wedding cost of $48,500, just making the top five in the most expensive places to get married. So 3 of the 5 most expensive places to get married in the States are in NY.

So What Gives?

Interestingly enough, the proportion of wedding costs is similar wherever you get married in the U.S. – 40/45% for the venue, catering, and rentals, 12-15% for the jewelry, 8-10% for the photography and video, 5% each for the planner/consultant, attire and accessories, and flowers and decorations, 17-20% for “the rest.” The most important determinant of a wedding’s cost is the number of guests as this affects venue, catering cost, and flowers and decorations.

No doubt Manhattan property prices are sky high and this influences the cost of venue but Santa Barbara/Ventura real estate isn’t exactly cheap yet an average wedding there costs “only” about $44,000 only marginally more than an average Westchester/Hudson Valley wedding at $42,500.

Is it possible that those having a wedding in Manhattan have so many more guests than those marrying in other parts of NY or other states? Possibly. Does the average couple getting married in Manhattan spend so much more on jewelry than those marrying elsewhere? This is also a possibility. And these two facts alone can heavily skew the numbers.

Honorable Mentions

Other places in the U.S. with heavily above average wedding costs include North/Central New Jersey at almost $51,300, Rhode Island at $42,500, Connecticut at $41, 750, Philly at just over $40,000, and L.A. at almost $39,000.

Something to keep in mind though is that the ski really is the limit when it comes to the cost of weddings. Also, all costs can be reduced significantly – even in New York; if you plan your wedding well in advance and are willing to be flexible with your reception.
