Incorporate old wedding traditions by adding a modern twist of your own.

Old Tradition: Matching Bridesmaid Dresses

New Tradition: Select a Color Palette

The era of bridal dictatorship is over. Your bridesmaids want to have more choices these days! Rather than picking out one identical dress for all of your bridesmaids to wear, select a color palette, set guidelines, and have your bridesmaids choose their own wedding attire. Letting your bridesmaids choose a color, shape, and price that is suitable for them is guaranteed to make them happy.

Old Tradition: Signature Book

New Tradition: Anniversary Notes

The traditional signature book is dated; not to mention, how many times will you actually read the book? A better idea is to have your guests write individual well-wishes for your first anniversary together. They’ll be private so guests will feel more comfortable writing something personal and the notes will also give you an opportunity to reconnect to guests a year later and relive your special day.

Old Tradition: Wedding Cake

New Tradition: Tiered Desserts

Most wedding cakes are made a couple days in advance of a wedding, as it takes many hours to assemble and decorate the cake. For the cost of a cake – which might not even be fresh – you can have sweet treats and baked goods made on the same day. Best of all, if you aren’t a fan of cake, you can have your favorite dessert at your wedding and share it with all your guests.

Likewise, tiered dessert trays offer the same elegance as a wedding cake, but can hold a number of other desserts like cupcakes, doughnuts, pie, macaroons, and a host of other petite desserts.

This tradition may be hard to kick as who doesn't love the unforgettable cutting of the cake? But who's to say that you can't do that with a cupcake or a doughnut??

Old Tradition: Throwing Rice

New Tradition: Tossing Rose Petals

Throwing rice, a tradition that wishes good fortune, prosperity, and fertility on the newlywed couple has been replaced with bubbles, sparklers, and confetti - which are more festive. However, our recommendation is to avoid all four of these and instead opt for rose petals.

You can have an assortment of colors, each with a different meaning, and in addition, they pose no safety hazard and are biodegradable.

Old Tradition: Floral Bridal Bouquet

New Tradition: Paper Bridal Bouquet

Flower and fresh plant cuttings will last one to two days at most– after that the best you can hope for is to dry your bouquet and hope it stays intact. On the other hand, a paper bouquet can last you years. You can choose something funky or traditional, realistic-looking or creative, and at the end of the day, still have a beautiful bouquet to display in your home and remind you of your big day.

Some traditions are too good to throw to the side of the road, while others should be replaced and forgotten about as soon as possible. Adding a modern twist to old wedding traditions will brighten up your big day and provide a little something extra to your guests. What modern twists will you add to your wedding?
