Is it Really a Nice Day for a White Wedding?

Who says you have to wear white on your wedding day? Try on a whimsical pastel color or head-turning hue for a non-traditional look on your special day.

The tradition of wearing a white wedding dress is not as timeless as you may think. It became a popular trend in 1840 when Queen Victoria of England wore a white gown at her own wedding to Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg. Prior to this, shades of grey, blue, and even red were common bridal gown colors.

Today, brides are taking more fashion cues from the runway and red carpet, and opting for variety in their bridal couture. If you decide white isn’t for you, there are now more options than ever to find the colorful dress of your dreams.

Shades of Pink

Toasted almond, strawberry ice, and mauvey mist are some of the latest colors coming out of the Pantone Color Institute. These shades of pink, rose, and lavender can give you a romantic look without straying too far from a traditional white wedding gown.

Sky Blues

Blue, signifying trust and loyalty, is also a great alternative to white, and the next go-to color if you aren’t a fan of pink. Sky and powdered blue wedding dresses look ethereal and will also nicely complement most color themes.

Bright Florals

A refreshing idea for spring and summer, a patterned floral gown will give you a fun, flirty look. These patterned dresses are also fantastic for garden and country weddings, and can probably be worn again to other summer soirees in the future.

Jewel Tones

No longer reserved for bridesmaids, fuchsia, teal, ruby, emerald green, and sapphire blue are bold color choices for a wedding dress. If you decide to go with one of these colors, silhouette should play a key factor when selecting the dress; make sure to stick with slim fitting, A-line shapes that will keep these colors from looking gaudy.

Statement Black

For all those rebel brides out there – this is your color. Seen last year in Vera Wang’s bridal collection, the black wedding dress is reserved for those that want to turn the white wedding dress on its head. To keep this daring color from looking dreary or gothic, make sure the silhouette is fun, and your makeup and hair remain light and relaxed.

Don't be afraid to ask yourself, "is it really a nice day for a white wedding?" Whichever color you decide on, make sure you feel comfortable and confident in your choice.
