As a master artisan who has been making jewelry since he was ten, Michael B knows that a designer is only as good as the materials he uses. Inferior precious metals and gems inevitably result in inferior jewelry, no matter how skilled the designer. That is why Michael B engagement rings are made with the finest materials available.
Long before he came to America, Michael B worked with platinum in his native Istanbul. He found the precious metal to be superior to gold in almost every way. But Americans only wanted gold. As a young jewelry maker in Studio City, California, Michael B was forced to work with the yellow stuff. After a few years, however, he was able to open his own jewelry store.
Michael B engagement rings slowly began to catch on with jewelry lovers in the Los Angeles area. Couples still preferred gold, but platinum soon became a viable option. By the 1990s, the unappreciated precious metal was so popular that jewelers were talking about a platinum revival.
After a more than a half century in the industry, Michael B. is still reluctant to work with any other metal. In fact, his Touch collection, launched in 2010, was the first to feature a metal other than platinum—white gold.
Michael B engagement rings are also prized for their high quality diamonds. The stones he uses in his micro pave settings are mined in Russia and are the finest diamonds available. Hand cut to perfection, they are F on the color grading chart and VVS 1 to VVS 2 when it comes to clarity. Both grades are the highest available for diamonds that are used in micro pave work.
All Michael B engagement rings feature stones that were obtained from ethical sources. The designer is an outspoken critic of jewelry makers who use blood or conflict diamonds. His customers can rest assured that his stones were not used to fund violence or war.
As we mentioned, Michael B does use white gold in one of his collections, but only for the sake of variety. He finds white gold to be an inferior precious metal, just like its yellow relative. That is why most Michael B engagement rings do not offer an alternative metal. According to the designer, the natural attributes of platinum are too obvious and too numerous to ignore. Not only is it stronger, denser and rarer, but it is also easier to work with than silver or gold. Platinum is also hypoallergenic and will not change colors over time, unlike gold.
