Country music was born in the Southern United States during the 1920 and was originally called hillbilly music. Folk singers travelled to music hot spots to hear what other artists were producing. There were many cities and towns that embraced this new American musical style, but none compared to Nashville, Tennessee.

The small city earned the moniker “Music City, USA” thanks in no small part to the Grand Ole Opry.  What began as a weekly stage concert that featured amateur country singers and was broadcast live on a small radio station soon became a national sensation. After the program was relayed to stations from coast to coast, singers flocked to the city hoping to make it to the big stage.

The original home of the Grand Ole Opry was Ryman Auditorium, which is located in downtown Nashville.  It is currently open to general public and is still used for entertainment events and small live music concerts. Due to limited seating, the show was moved to a more commodious venue in 1974.

A list of regular members of the Opry reads like a who’s who of country music. Most of the legends from the golden era of country and western music played on the Opry’s stage, including Hank Williams, Roy Acuff, Bill Monroe, Patsy Cline, the Carter family, Ernest Tubb, Minnie Pearl and Kitty Wells.  Contemporary stars have also made their mark. Carrie Underwood, Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks and Dolly Parton became regulars at the Opry in recent years.

Many other small Southern states have similar venues that attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Louisville, Kentucky, for example, is home to the Kentucky Derby. One of the oldest horse races in US history, it is held in Louisville on the first Saturday in May. Countless visitors travel between to two cities to hear the best music and see “the most exciting two minutes in sports” each year.  Louisville is only about a three-hour drive from Music City, USA.
