Engagement rings are among the few items in this world that can be truly timeless. Still, people’s tastes change and something you liked when you were twenty-something may not be something you still love when you are in your forties. Also, you might have fallen prey to some fad that was going around when you got engaged and chose something that is far from traditional. Many brides-to-be are on strict budgets when they choose or receive their rings. Later on in life, there are more options available due to a larger budget. Here is how to go about upgrading your engagement ring when the time is right.

The Diamond

Many times it is the diamond that needs to be upgraded, as the desire for a larger stone grows. This of course does not mean discarding the stone, or even selling or trading it. First of all, it has sentimental value. It was the diamond you were proposed to with. Second of all, it can always be used as a secondary stone. You can choose a larger stone as the center diamond and use your old stone as a side stone.

The Setting

You can upgrade your ring setting by getting a new diamond, or by using the same one. By placing it in a new ring setting it will look completely different. If you had a yellow gold setting, you can choose a white gold or platinum setting, which will be a whole new look. There is also the option of adding diamonds to the setting that can add a lot of flavor.

Different Amount of Prongs

Each diamond shape requires a minimum amount of prongs to hold the diamond. However, more prongs can always be added and this can change the look of a diamond. For instance, a round diamond can be placed in four prongs for a square look or in six for a rounder and larger appearance. When upgrading your ring, you can go with a different amount of prongs for a new and fresh impression.

The Color

The simplest way to give your ring a makeover is by changing the color of the metal. If the ring is yellow gold, you can have it coated to be white gold and if it’s white gold you can have it easily turned to yellow. Without doing or spending a lot your ring will look completely different.

A time will come at some point in your life when you will want a little bit of a change when it comes to your engagement ring. As much as you may have loved it when you got it, things change. You can spend next to nothing or add quite a steep sum; it’s up to you and what you are looking for. There are many designers with gorgeous ring designs that could be perfect for your ring makeovers, from Kirk Kara to Simon G to Michael B and many others.
