They seem to have it all – talent, beauty, wealth and all its trappings, the perfect partner, access to the best parties and restaurants – in short, a seemingly blessed existence. But do we really know what lurks beneath the surface of what seems to be a life to which we all aspire?

Former model, L’Wren Scott, seemingly had it all – a successful career as a fashion and costume designer and a long-term relationship with rock legend, Mick Jagger.

After leaving her Utah home to further her modeling career, Scott’s life seems to have had two common threads - the privilege of working with the best of the best and the pursuit of excellence in all she attempted.

Her early modeling career saw her work with the likes of Chanel and Thierry Mugler and model for famous photographers such as Guy Bourdin and Jean-Paul Goude. Her successful evolution to celebrity stylist saw her work with luminaries such as Herb Ritts, Karl Lagerfeld, and Helmut Newton. And when she turned her hand to fashion and costume design in 2006, she was an instant hit and her client list began to read like a who’s who of the entertainment world.

Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lawrence, Madonna, Amy Adams, Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Sarah Jessica-Parker, Uma Thurman, Naomi Campbell, and numerous other household-name celebrities wore Scott’s creations to events such as the Academy Awards and other red carpet ceremonies. Even the First Lady, Michelle Obama, has been dressed by L’Wren Scott.

In a tragic end to a life that brought so much joy and beauty to the world, L’Wren Scott was found dead by her assistant in her Manhattan apartment on the morning of March 17, 2014, a month shy of her 50th birthday. No suicide note was left and no foul play suspected.

We will probably never know what led Scott to take her life, we will only be left with the work of someone who always strove to do her best and created so much beauty in the world. There is a lesson in that for all of us.
